Deptford, New Jersey, is a township in Gloucester County. It was named after the English town of Deptford. The population was 15,959 in the 2010 United States Census.
In 1664, William Penn purchased the land that would become Deptford Township from the Lenni Lenape Native Americans for goods worth £100 (or approximately $1,000 in today’s currency). He bought it at a treaty held at Shackamaxon near what is now Franklintown, Pennsylvania. The Lenape were known to have lived in this area long before any European settlers arrived. The Lenape lived on or near the Delaware River. They raised corn, beans, pumpkins, and squash in clearings and hunted game in the surrounding woods.
The first white settlers came to this area from England and Wales around 1680. They bought their land from William Penn’s son Thomas Penn and his wife, Hannah Callowhill Penn. In 1685 John Lightfoot purchased 1,000 acres from Thomas Penn for £200 (or around $2,500 today). Lightfoot built a mill on this property along with a house for himself and his family on what is now Bridge Street between Route 42 and Route 55 (Deptford Avenue). This area
