Ewing is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the town’s population was 22,816. It is part of the Princeton Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Ewing Township was incorporated as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 23, 1849, from portions of West Windsor Township (now Lawrence Township). Parts of the township were taken to form Cranbury Township (March 10, 1872), Plainsboro Township (March 15, 1928), and Montgomery Township (April 1, 1938).
The area was initially known as “the Plains” and has settled by Quakers from Long Island in 1695. The community was officially named Ewingville in 1847 in honor of lawyer James Ewing who had purchased land there in 1740, which he developed into a plantation with slave labor. In 1910 a portion of Ewing Township was ceded to Trenton to help establish Milford Township.
The first European settlers arrived around 1695; they were Quakers from Long Island who settled near Pennington Road (U.S. Route 1) and Old York Road (U.S. Route 206). Many early settlers were Dutch or Huguenots who were attracted to this area because
