Freehold, New Jersey, is a small town with a population of 21,000. It is located in Monmouth County and has established in 1693. The city was named after John Fenwick’s “freehold” land grant from King Charles II.
Freehold is located on the northern bank of the Navesink River and is bordered by West Long Branch to the north, Neptune Township to the east, and Eatontown to the south. Freehold Township was incorporated as a township on March 15, 1849, and became Freehold Borough on April 4, 1876.
Freehold Borough became independent from Freehold Township in 1898 when it broke off from Freehold Township and became a separate municipality within Monmouth County.
The name “Freehold” comes from John Fenwick’s “freehold” land grant from King Charles II. Fenwick initially purchased the land for 102 pounds sterling in 1685 from William Penn and a group of Quakers from Pennsylvania who had come over seeking religious freedom in 1682.
The area was initially inhabited by Native Americans who were taught how to farm by English settlers who arrived in 1680, after which they began growing corn crops on their farms.
