Hackettstown, New Jersey, is a small town of about 5,000 people in Warren County. It is located in the northwest corner of the state, only an hour and a half from New York City and less than two hours from Philadelphia and Baltimore.

The town was named after John Hackett, who owned much of the land that would become Hackettstown during the late 1700s. The city was chartered in 1849 and incorporated in 1872.

The first settlers came to Hackettstown around 1740. Most of them were farmers who grew rye, wheat, corn, and oats. They also raised cows for milk and pigs and sheep for meat. The farmers sold their crops at markets in Princeton or Morristown; they also sold butter locally or sent it by boat down the Delaware River to Philadelphia (which then had no icehouse). In addition to farming, there were several mills along the Pequest River in those days: sawmills, gristmills, dye houses, and cloth factories all produced products throughout Warren County during this period (from 1750 until about 1850).

The area around Hackettstown also became known for its mineral resources during this period. Iron ore was mined from deposits near Mountain Lake Park.
