Jersey City is a city in Hudson County, New Jersey, United States. It is the second-most populous city in the state after Newark, with a population of 266,500. As of 2018, the Census Bureau’s Population Estimates Program calculated that Jersey City’s population was 270,005.
Jersey City is part of the New York metropolitan area and is connected to Manhattan by the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail. It was initially incorporated as a city in 1838, following the consolidation of Bergen Township and Hudson City (which included Hoboken). Jersey City was reincorporated on February 14, 1851, and again on March 11, 1873.
While some sources say that it was named for James E. Gordon, who had opened a shop there a year earlier and eventually became its first mayor (1839–1841), others believe that it was named for Governor of New York William Montgomerie, Lord Gordon. Some sources indicate that it may have been named for the many wild turkeys lurking about its forested area; those birds are called gobblers (or “turkeys”) in New Jersey’s vernacular.
The industries which have been predominant in this city have been manufacturing and refining: metallurgical works and iron works.
