New Mexico is a state in the southwestern part of the United States. It’s one of the few states that borders both Texas and Mexico, and it also borders Arizona, Colorado, Oklahoma, and Utah.
New Mexico has a population of 2 million people, which makes it the 28th most populous state. The capital city of New Mexico is Santa Fe, which is also home to one of the oldest cities in the United States: Santa Fe de Santa Fe (or “Old Santa Fe”).
New Mexico was first settled by Native Americans around 1250 CE. The Spanish came to New Mexico in 1598 and established Santa Fe as their capital city. In 1610 Spain founded a colony there called San Juan de los Caballeros (later renamed Santa Fe) which controlled much of what is now New Mexico until it was ceded to Great Britain during the French and Indian War in 1763. It was taken back by Spain after Napoleon invaded Spain in 1808 but given back again when Napoleon was defeated at Waterloo in 1815; it remained under Spanish control until 1821 when Mexico declared independence from Spain and took over control of New Mexico as well as other territories including California, Texas, Wyoming and parts of Colorado.
