Albany is the capital of the U.S. state of New York and the seat of Albany County. It is located on the west bank of the Hudson River approximately 20 miles (30 km) south of the United States port city of New York, and directly north of Schenectady, its former sister city.
With a population of 97,200 as measured by the 2010 census, Albany is the second most populous city in New York after New York City, which is approximately 30 mi (50 km) to its southwest. This makes Albany the second most populous capital in the United States after Washington, D.C., which had 11,658 people per square mile in 2000.
The city was chartered in 1686 under English rule and became a center for American revolutionary activity during the 1770s and 1780s. Albany is one of thirteen cities that claim to be named after King James II’s Duke of York. In reality, there was no Duke of Albany; rather, the duke’s title came from his ancestral home at Raby Castle in County Durham (now part of England). The name was transferred to what would become Albany County when counties were established in New York State in 1683 (before that time it had been part of Ulster County).
