Amherst is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. As of the 2010 census, Amherst had a population of 123,856. It is an inner ring suburb of Buffalo and part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls metropolitan area.
The town was named after Lord Jeffrey Amherst, 1st Baron Amherst, commander-in-chief of British forces in North America at the time of the French and Indian War (Seven Years’ War), who was hailed as a hero by the inhabitants of nearby settlements for his successful campaigns against the French and Indians. Amherst was created from part of the town of Clarence (now an inner suburb of Buffalo) on March 7, 1818.
The town includes part or all of 13 villages: Amherst; Eggertsville; Getzville; Snyder; South Amherst; Williamsville (“the Village”); East Aurora (“the Village”); Aurora (“the Village”); Clarence; Depew (“the Village”); Lancaster; Sloan’s Point; Wales Center (“the Village”); and Williamsburg.
