Horseheads is a town in Chemung County, New York, United States. The population was 6,907 at the 2010 census.

The Town of Horseheads was settled around 1790 by a group of settlers from Connecticut, who named it after the shape of the local creek that flows into Seneca Lake. The first settlement was known as “Gibson’s Landing”. Gibson’s Landing was a small community that had a store, post office and several homes. The main industry of Horsehead’s Landing was farming.

In 1831, the Erie Canal was built through Horseheads and provided economic stability to the area by allowing coal mining companies to bring their products to market more easily. In 1835, Gibson’s Landing was renamed “Horse Heads” because of the shape of Seneca Lake where it meets Cayuga Lake near Ithaca and Watkins Glen. Cheap Car Rentals Ithaca
