Huntington is a city in Suffolk County, New York, United States. It is the second most populous city on Long Island after New York City, and one of the southernmost cities in the state.
Huntington’s population at the time of the 2010 census was 203,000. In 2016, Huntington’s estimated population was 217,579. It is bordered by the hamlets of Melville and Cold Spring Harbor to the north, Northport to the east, and Port Jefferson to the south. The town also lies on Long Island’s Gold Coast.
The area that would become Huntington was settled in 1653 as part of “Suffolk County/Town/Southold” by English colonists who had sailed from Connecticut and Massachusetts Bay Colony to settle there for religious freedom. The land was purchased by “John Forstall” (1606-1679) in 1656. He died in 1679 without any heirs so his property went to his brother “William Forstall”, who had been an original owner of land on Oyster Bay. In 1664 William sold the land to “Robert Williams”, who became a major buyer of land in this area. He created a large estate which he called “Williamsburg”.
