Lynbrook is a hamlet in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 28,639 at the 2010 census. It is one of the largest unincorporated communities in New York State, and is served by the Lynbrook Union Free School District. Lynbrook is a community in the southwestern part of the town of Hempstead, surrounded by the villages of Valley Stream and East Rockaway.
The community was once known as “Lynn’s Brook” (or “Lynn’s Brookdale”) before being incorporated as Lynbrook village in 1911. It has been suggested that the name comes from a local family named Lynn who settled here in 1650, but there is no evidence to support this. The current name most likely comes from a local man who owned land near Prospect Park during the late 19th century – his last name was Brook.
In 1892, a post office called Lynbrook opened at Peninsula Boulevard and Hillside Avenue (now Sunrise Highway). It closed in 1907, reopened in 1916 under its current name (after another nearby post office had closed), and moved to its current location on Glen Cove Road in 1957. On September 27, 1960 a new school district was formed called Lynbrook Union Free School District which included students.
