Ronkonkoma is a hamlet and census-designated place in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 13,946 at the 2010 census. It is on Long Island’s South Shore just east of Ronkonkoma Lake and the village of Lake Ronkonkoma.

Ronkonkoma was first settled in 1655 by colonists from Hempstead, New Netherland (later Queens County). It was known as “Pronkkonkoma”, which means “long crook” or “extended point” in Algonquian language. The name was applied to a bend in a nearby stream that came into being when the land was cleared for farming by Dutch settlers.[1] In 1910, it became an incorporated village within the Town of Islip. In 1940, the community had about 2,500 residents who were served by one train station at Middle Country Road (today’s Sunrise Highway).[3] In 1942, the US Army acquired land near Middle Country Road for Camp Upton, a training base that eventually grew to be the largest military base on Long Island.
