Staten Island was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans. It was called “Aquehonga” by the native inhabitants. Dutch settlers arrived in 1639, and they named it “Staten Eylandt” or “Stony Island.” The British took over control in 1664, but they returned it to the Dutch in 1683 when they realized how much trouble they were having trying to govern such a far-flung colony.
