Syracuse is a city in Central New York, a major cultural and educational center in the state. The city’s nickname, “the Salt City,” derives from Syracuse’s history as an important salt-producing center.
Syracuse was founded in 1800 by John Wilkinson and Alexander Hamilton, who made the town that bears their names. It was named after Siracusa, Sicily, which was an important city-state in the ancient Greek world.
The city has a rich history of higher education and culture. In 1831, Syracuse University opened its doors as the first university in Central New York to offer degrees to women and minorities; it remains one of only four universities in the country with this distinction today. Carver), inventor of peanut butter among other things; and Eudora Welty (1909–2001), Pulitzer Prize-winning author who lived there until her death at age 92.
