Fayetteville is a city in Cumberland County, North Carolina. It is the county seat of Cumberland County, and part of the Fayetteville metropolitan area. It’s home to Fort Bragg, the largest military installation in the world by population.

Fayetteville was founded in 1783 and named after General Nathanael Greene, an American Revolutionary War commander who also served as a delegate to the Continental Congress of 1778-1779. In 1808, Fayetteville became the county seat of Cumberland County after a vote by residents. The city grew rapidly during the Civil War due to its strategic location near Fort Bragg. In 1865, Union forces burned down many buildings around Fayetteville as they retreated from Confederate troops during the last major battle of the war at Bentonville. The city grew steadily over time—the population was only 5,000 people in 1860; but by 1900 it had grown more than tenfold to 55,000 people—and has continued growing ever since.
