Wilmington, North Carolina is a city in New Hanover County, North Carolina. It is located on the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Ocean. The city is a suburb of both Wilmington and Jacksonville and has a population of 72,894 as of 2010.
The first recorded landing on Wrightsville Beach was by John White in 1587. A permanent settlement started in 1724 as a fishing village named “Wilmington”. The area was named for Spencer Compton, 1st Earl of Wilmington, who served as British Prime Minister from 1742–1743. He was granted a large tract of land along the Cape Fear River that became known as the “Compton Grant.” In 1788, he began to develop this tract into a community called “New Towne,” which later became known as Wilmington.
The city continued to grow throughout the nineteenth century, but it did not become incorporated until 1833 at which time it adopted the name Wilmington City (later shortened). In 1838, Wilmington was incorporated as a town; in 1851 it became a city; and in 1899 it adopted its present name of “Wilmington” (the apostrophe was not used in earlier years).
