Dickinson, North Dakota is a city in Stark County, North Dakota, United States. It is the county seat of Stark County and is part of the Dickinson Micropolitan Statistical Area. The city was named after Carlisle Floyd Dickinson, president of Northern Pacific’s Dickinson Division.
Dickinson is perhaps best known as the hometown of former Vice President and Congressman Dick Cheney, who attended high school there and whose father served as a state legislator for many years; it is also where his wife Lynne Cheney grew up near her family’s ranching business.
The city has experienced steady growth since its founding: from 716 residents in 1882 to 5,000 in 1900 (as well as an explosion during World War II), 10,000 residents by 1960 and over 18,000 today.
