Minot is a city in the state of North Dakota. It is the county seat and largest city of Ward County. The population was 41,808 at the 2010 census. Minot is located within the Bakken Formation in a region known as “the oil patch.”

Minot was founded in 1886 during construction of the Great Northern Railway, which named it after Henry D. Minot, a railroad investor from Boston. In 1887, it became the county seat of Ward County. Its early economy was based on serving local farmers who grew wheat and other grains on nearby ranches and farms; however, its location on the transcontinental rail line also made it an important center for trade and distribution of goods. In 1913, the Federal Bureau of Investigation established its first permanent field office here under Special Agent Samuel Pendergast.
