Swanton is a city in Miami County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,902 at the 2000 census.

Swanton was platted in 1822 by Alexander Shaw and others. It was named for John Swanton, a railroad official who had surveyed the land for the railroad.

The first school was established in 1825. About 1828 a log house was built as a church and used until 1832 when a frame building was erected as a union church by Presbyterians and Methodists. The first post office opened in 1828 with Robert Wilson serving as postmaster; the postmaster position has been held by seven people since then. The village of Swanton became incorporated as a city in 1890 with an estimated population of 1,000 people (the current population is about 5,900).
