Tulsa is a city in Oklahoma. It is the second-largest city in the state, with a population of 391,906 as of the 2010 census.
Tulsa is situated on the Arkansas River. The city’s name is derived from Tulu-tsi, the Osage name for nearby Fort Gibson Lake, which in turn was derived from the Osage language word for “raccoon.” In 1881 Tulsa was incorporated as a city of about 800 people with a mayor-council form of government. By 1900, Tulsa was one of the 101 largest cities in America with a population of more than 41,000. By 1910 it had grown to 80,000 and by 1920 it had grown to 150,000 residents. The city has experienced rapid growth since then; its population nearly quadrupled during the 1920s and doubled each decade between 1930 and 1960. Tulsa became known as “America’s Most Beautiful City” during this period due to an extensive civic beautification campaign that resulted in many structures being built in art deco style architecture. In 1921 Tulsa annexed promontory land on its south side containing oil fields discovered in 1914.
