Oregon is a state in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. It is located on the Pacific coast, with Washington to the north, California to the south, Nevada on the southeast and Idaho to the east. The Columbia River delineates much of Oregon’s northern boundary with Washington and then forms a portion of its eastern border with Idaho. The Snake River forms most of Oregon’s southern boundary with Idaho.
The state’s name originates from the word “oregon,” which comes from a Native American language meaning “place of many trees”.
Oregon was inhabited by many indigenous tribes before European exploration. The Oregon Country was explored by Europeans in 1778, when British explorer Captain James Cook arrived at the Columbian River near present-day Astoria, Oregon. In 1805, Lewis and Clark crossed what became known as the Oregon Trail and settled in Fort Vancouver on the Columbia River. In 1811, New York commercial traders founded Fort Astoria at modern-day Astoria, which was later moved to Vancouver in 1824 and became part of Canada until its independence in 1871 as British Columbia.
