The area around Medford was first settled by white settlers in 1851 when David Loring arrived from California with his cattle. He established a farm at what is now North Central Avenue and Ashland Avenue, near where he built a log cabin for his family. By the late 1850s other settlers had moved into the area and established homesteads that would eventually grow into Medford proper.
One of these early homesteaders was Robert Byington Mitchell who purchased 160 acres from Loring in 1857 and built a house on top of Prospect Hill overlooking downtown Medford. This area would later become known as Mitchell Hill and provide many views over downtown Medford when it was developed into residential properties starting in 1910.
