Monroeville is a borough in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is located approximately 15 miles east of Pittsburgh and is part of the Pittsburgh Metro Area. The population was 5,528 at the 2010 census.
Monroeville was settled around 1772 by Scots-Irish Presbyterians and named after James Monroe, who had just been elected President of the United States two years earlier. The first settlers were William Russel and his wife Mary McClay. They were followed by Andrew Henderson and his wife Mary McMillan, who arrived in 1773. Henderson helped organize the community and became its first postmaster in 1801.
The township’s name was changed to Monroeville on April 20, 1819 when its post office opened. This name change occurred at the suggestion of John Wilkins Kendall as a way to honor James Monroe for his support during the War of 1812.
Early industries included agriculture, lumbering, and brewing beer. The first brewery was established by John Heyl in 1818. In 1832 David Kennedy built a gristmill on Big Sewickley Creek nearby.
