South Dakota is a state in the Midwestern United States. It is named after the Lakota and Dakota Sioux Native American tribes. The capital is Pierre, but Sioux Falls is the largest city.
The state’s name is derived from the Dakota word “minisota” (meaning “sky-tinted water”), which refers to the Minnesota River. The name became official on November 2, 1889 when President Benjamin Harrison signed an act admitting South Dakota to the Union as the 40th state.
The U.S. Forest Service manages 31 million acres (13,000 km2) of lands in South Dakota, which comprise about 10% of all lands in South Dakota, with most of the acreage devoted to timber production and commercial grazing leases. In 2007, there were 7 million acres (2 million hectares) of national forest land in South Dakota managed by the U.S. Forest Service, and this area covered about one third of the state’s land area (excluding private inholdings).
