Rapid City, South Dakota is the second most populous city in the state, with a population of approximately 70,000 people. It’s also the county seat for Pennington County.
The city was founded in 1874 by George W. Stevens and named after Rapid Creek, which runs through the city. The town grew quickly thanks to its location at the intersection of two major railroads. Rapid City became a hub for cattle drives headed west and gold prospectors heading north.
In 1879, the city was designated as a military post and renamed Fort Meade. It was renamed again in 1890 to honor Civil War General John George “Black Jack” Pershing. In 1883, the city was incorporated as Rapid City but did not become an official city until 1905 when it had over 5,000 residents.
