Clarksville, Tennessee is a city in Montgomery County, Tennessee. The population was 140,058 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Montgomery County and is located on the Cumberland River.

The city was named in honor of General George Rogers Clark (1752–1818), who led American Patriots in the American Revolution’s Illinois campaign and captured a British garrison at Vincennes, Indiana on February 25, 1779.

The first European Americans to settle Clarksville were William Bumpass and his wife, Jemima French Bumpass. They purchased 1,280 acres from the state of North Carolina in 1780 for $1,200.00 and named it “Bumpass Cove,” which was later changed to “Clarksville.” In 1782, John Redman built his home just west of Bumpass Cove Road near what is now 14th Street. Later that same year Robert Rhea moved to Clarksville and established a law practice. He represented Washington County in the North Carolina Assembly from 1785 to 1787 and served as an associate justice of the Superior Court of Law and Equity starting in 1788.
