Jackson is a city in and the county seat of Madison County, Tennessee. The population was 23,856 at the 2010 census. Jackson is part of the Jackson, Tennessee metropolitan area, which includes Madison and Henderson counties and is included in the Memphis metropolitan area.
Jackson is located on State Route 20 at its intersection with U.S. Route 70, about 50 miles east of Memphis. The city’s downtown area has been designated as a historic district by the National Register of Historic Places, which recognizes its significant 19th-century architecture.
The city was named after Andrew Jackson, U.S. president when the town charter was granted in 1821. It was incorporated on March 1, 1823. Before then, it had been called Calhoun; then Sinking Spring; then Big Springs; and finally Jackson.
In 1872, President Ulysses S. Grant visited Jackson to lay in state at the former hotel, now known as The Guest House Inn in what was then known as Shiloh National Military Park.
