Fort Worth is a city in the U.S. state of Texas, located in Tarrant County. It is the county seat of Tarrant County, covering a land area of 164 square miles (418 km2) and a population of 824,515 in 2016. The city is located within North Texas and has been named one of the “Top 100 Places To Live” by Relocate America.
The city’s history dates back to 1849 when members of the Republic of Texas established a temporary fort for protection against hostile Native American tribes while they awaited the arrival of General Winfield Scott and his United States Army forces. In 1873, Fort Worth became the seat of Tarrant County after being named for General William Jenkins Worth, who fell at the Battle of San Jacinto during the Texas Revolution.
Fort Worth grew from an unincorporated community to a major city through two periods of rapid growth in the late 19th century and first decades of the 20th century, when it became an industrializing center and business hub; it was also helped by its close proximity to railroads but later lost much of its prominence due to general economic decline after World War II.
