Richardson, Texas is a large city in Collin County, Texas. It is located about 20 miles north of Dallas and is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. The city has a population of more than 99,000 people, making it the seventh largest city in Texas and the 48th largest city in the United States.
Richardson was founded in 1872 as an agricultural community by homesteaders who were looking for land to raise their families. The area was originally known as “Richardson’s Colony,” after its founder, Edwin R. (Eddie) Richardson. The town wasn’t incorporated until May 24th, 1873.
Richardson’s early history was dominated by agriculture and farming. The first schoolhouse built in Richardson was constructed in 1877 at what is now Viney Creek Park on South Central Expressway; this building still stands today as the oldest schoolhouse in Collin County. In 1890, a small mill opened up at the intersection of Farm Road 544 (now Preston Road) and what would later become SH 114 (now US 75). This mill became known as “Old Mill” due to its proximity to Jenkins Creek.
