St. George is a city in Washington County, Utah, United States. It is part of the St. George Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city lies near many famous national parks and monuments, including Zion National Park and the Grand Canyon. It is also the location of Dixie State University, Southern Utah University’s St. George Campus and Snow Canyon State Park. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 76,817 people (2012 estimate: 80,013) and has an area of 50 miles² (123 km²).
The city was named after George A. Smith (1817–1875), an apostle of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who was sent to Washington DC to lobby for Utah’s statehood.
In 1877 President Brigham Young called for the establishment of a fort at or near Cedar City, Utah. The fort was originally named Camp Floyd but later changed to Fort St. George. In 1878 the first LDS church temple in present-day Utah was built there. In 1882 it was renamed Parowan after Parowan City when that town became a county seat. In 1917 the county seat was moved back to Cedar City.
