Vermont is a state in the New England region of the United States of America. It became the 14th state on March 4, 1791. Vermont is bordered by New Hampshire to its west, Massachusetts to its south and New York to its east. To the north, it borders Quebec and Canada.
The state has a total area of 9,614 square miles (24,900 km2), making it the 45th-largest state by area. The capital is Montpelier. The largest city and metropolitan area is Burlington. As of 2008, Vermont had an estimated population of 626,340, making it the 2nd-least populous U.S. state after Wyoming, but the 6th-most densely populated state in the country with 1,166 people per square mile (450/km2).
Vermont’s largest city, Burlington, is home to about one third of Vermont’s population; about 42% of all residents live in Chittenden County and 35% live in Orleans County.
