Virginia is a state in the southeastern region of the United States. It borders North Carolina to the south, Tennessee to the west, Kentucky and West Virginia to the east, and Maryland and Delaware to the north. The Commonwealth of Virginia has an area of 42,774 square miles (110,784 km2), and a population of 7,100,001 as of 2017.
Virginia is nicknamed the “Old Dominion” because it was one of the original Thirteen Colonies established by Great Britain in America in 1607. It also borders Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia and Washington D.C., which are all located along its southern border.
The state’s history begins at Jamestown in 1607 where colonists established America’s first permanent settlement on land inhabited by Native Americans. It became one of the 13 colonies that declared independence from Great Britain during the American Revolutionary War (1775–1783). It was named after Queen Henrietta Maria who was married to King Charles I of England in 1625. In 1777 during the American Revolutionary War (1775–1783), General George Washington led American soldiers into battle against British troops at Yorktown for ten days until Cornwallis surrendered on October 19.
