Chesapeake is a city in Virginia, United States. It is located on the Chesapeake Bay and is part of the Hampton Roads metropolitan area. The city’s population was 222,771 as of the 2010 census, making it the second-largest city in Virginia.
The area now known as Chesapeake was once a part of Elizabeth City County when it was formed in 1634. Elizabeth City County was one of eight original shires (counties) established in colonial Virginia in 1634 by order of King Charles I, which were then combined to form modern-day Northampton County. One year later, in 1635, New Norfolk County was split off from Elizabeth City County. In 1691, another part of New Norfolk County was split off to create Warwick County. The latter two counties were eventually removed from the southern border to make room for the creation of Gloucester County in 1744. Cheap Car Rentals Fairfax
Incorporation as a town under a special charter came with a change in status from Elizabeth City Court House to an independent city on March 30th, 1875; however some sources indicate that incorporation took place as early as 1872. It has been suggested that this discrepancy may be related to confusion between separate townships named “Chesapeake” that had existed.
