Washington is a city in Washington County, Utah, United States. It is part of the St. George Metropolitan Area.
Washington was first settled in 1873 by William and John Washington and their families. The town was originally called “Washington City”, but the name was later changed to “Washington”. A post office was established on March 11, 1874, with William Washington as its first postmaster; he served until 1880. The community grew slowly until about 1900 when the Dixie Highway went through the town. This led to more businesses setting up shop in Washington, including a hotel and a store owned by John S. Young (future father-in-law of Brigham Young Jr.).
In 1891, a small group of Latter-day Saints from Panguitch settled in Washington, giving it its current name. In 1893, they built the first meetinghouse there and the following year they organized their own ward within the Washington Stake of Zion (which included towns such as Leeds and Gunlock). In 1897, a branch of Zion’s Savings Bank opened up in Washington; it was one of four banks operated by Latter-day Saints between 1894 and 1907 (the others being located at Leeds and Gunlock).
