In 1852, three settlers explored “Whatcom” Bay searching for new farmlands. Charles Terry and Charlie Taylor (dubbed “The Two Charters”) sought land south of their previous claim at Canyon Creek (now South Fork Holgate) and built a cabin on a point nearby. The third settler, Sam Reed, claimed an area near future Whatcom Creek (present-day Nooksack River) at what is now called Point Roberts in February 1853.
