Puyallup is a city near Tacoma, Washington. It is part of the Puyallup Valley, which includes the cities of Sumner and Fife.
The Puyallup Indian Tribe has had a presence in this area since the 1700s. They are a federally recognized tribe, but they also have their reservation located in nearby Tacoma.
In 1851, George Gibbs (a pioneer settler) bought land from Chief Kamiakin’s tribe and built his home there. In 1857, the government set aside this land as a reservation for Native Americans.
In 1875, the Northern Pacific Railroad built tracks through what is now Puyallup; this brought many new settlers to the area who wanted to farm or ranch on the fertile land around Lake Kapowsin. The town was officially incorporated in 1888 with a population of 1,000 people living there at that time.
