Walla Walla is a city in the U.S. state of Washington, at the confluence of the Snake and Columbia Rivers. It was named by a French Canadian fur trapper after a Native American chief named Wa’la. The population was 32,743 at the 2010 census.
The city has been officially nicknamed “The Heart of Washington Wine Country.” Since the late 1980s, wineries have proliferated in the region as well as restaurants featuring local cuisine, including fresh fish and oysters from nearby rivers, clams and mussels from nearby lakes, orchards with seasonal fruits, and herbs and vegetables from local gardens.
In 1818, Peter Skene Ogden (1790-1854) led fur trappers from Hudson’s Bay Company trapping expeditions in the Rocky Mountains eastward through Hells Canyon and into North Central Oregon, drawing British trade away from Russia’s American Fur Company. In 1824 Robert Stuart (1785-1848), returning eastward by way of the Snake River Plain in present-day Idaho, reported that he had found a suitable place to establish a fort near what is now Walla Walla (then Fort Nez Perces), Washington Territory.
