Racine is a city in south-central Wisconsin, and the county seat of Racine County. It is located on Lake Michigan at the mouth of the Root River and has a population of 77,563.
The area was first settled by European Americans in 1834, following the Treaty of Chicago that led to the forced removal of Native Americans from the area. In 1836, an act was passed to establish a township, and then another in 1837 which established Racine as an incorporated municipality. As part of the lead mining industry, Racine attracted immigrants from Finland, Poland, Sweden and Italy during this time.
In 1841, John Hurd (the first mayor) arrived in the area from New York state and built a cabin along what is now Root River Road. He had been attracted to the area by its rich soil and large forests. In 1844, he published a pamphlet entitled “The Townships of Racine County.” In 1845, he built a log cabin on his land where he would live for many years before moving into Racine itself.
