Sheboygan is a city in, and the county seat of, Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 49,218 at the 2010 census. It is the principal city of the Sheboygan, Wisconsin Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city is located on the west shore of Lake Michigan at the mouth of the Sheboygan River.

The area was originally settled by Native Americans. Europeans settled here in 1839-40. The community was named for Sachem (chief) Shabonee (or Sheboygen). In September 1852, Sheboygan Falls was founded as a village; it developed as an industrial center along the North Shore Railroad route from Milwaukee to Green Bay. In the late 1800s, John Burtka came to Sheboygan and built cheese factories; he also added a canning operation that produced its first cans of processed peas and carrots on March 1, 1911.

In 1925, Burtka’s company became known as “Sheboygan Frozen Foods” and began marketing its products nationally through television advertisements featuring his daughter-in-law Zelma “Squeakie” Froman as a spokesperson during her three terms as First Lady of Wisconsin (1957–1961).
