Wyoming is a state in the mountain region of the Western United States. The state is the 10th largest by area, but the least populous and the second least densely populated of the 50 United States.
Wyoming is divided into 23 counties and contains 97 towns, with Cheyenne as the state capital. The surface is ruggedly mountainous with steep slopes and peaks; its highest point is Grand Teton at 13,775 feet (4,197 m). There are also several large freshwater lakes including Yellowstone Lake and Lake Granby. A cold desert climate prevails except in the south where aridity has created more temperate conditions.
The western two-thirds of the state is covered mostly by the mountain ranges and rangelands in the foothills of the eastward-rising Rocky Mountains that include Laramie Peak and Cloud Peak which are igneous rock while Granite Peak is volcanic plutonic rock; both of these ranges are popular for climbing and hunting. The Great Divide Basin in northern Wyoming is a large geologic depression that separates into four large watersheds that include three major rivers: Republican River, Green River, and Colorado River.
