Cheyenne, Wyoming is the capital of the state and the county seat of Laramie County. It is located in southeastern Wyoming on the eastern edge of the Great Plains, along the South Fork of the Platte River. The city was named after James Cheyenne, a Sioux chief who became a scout for General John C. Fremont and guided his party through the area in 1842.

Cheyenne is situated near where the Oregon Trail crosses over the east branch of the Laramie River (known locally as Horse Creek). In 1806, Fort Lisa was established as an outpost for trappers and traders heading into Colorado Territory. After a flood destroyed their fort in 1849, they moved to higher ground and built Fort Halleck at present-day W 17th Street and Grand Avenue, which remained active until 1874.
